Stakes
Our stakes are made from the lightest weight materials like titanium, carbon fiber or high grade aluminum. A thicker, longer stake will usually hold the ground more securely, but they may also be heavier or tough to drive into compacted ground.
The holding power and bend resistance of our stakes is ranked relative to each other on a scale of Low -> Good -> Better -> Best.
Check out our guide for advice on which stakes to choose for your trip.
6" Ultralight Titanium Tent Stake
$2.75Weight 0.19 oz (5.4 g)Stakes worked well in a lot of different ground types. Rocky or sandy or bushes always seemed to find a way to set up my tent and they held all night. Very strong too. Haven’t bent any even though I did hit a few rocks.
These ultralight titanium stakes have reasonable holding power and durability for their size. Titanium is very light and strong for its weight, but some care should be exercised to prevent bending. Thin stakes like these are easier to press into firm soil compared to thicker stakes. They are great for low intensity applications like pinning down a groundsheet, or in combination with some thicker higher holding power stakes like Zpacks Carbon Fiber Stakes. You will want to use rocks to weigh them down in loose soil or in windy conditions.
They have an orange head, which makes them harder to lose.

6.5" Red Tough Titanium Tent Stake
$2.95Weight 0.28 oz (8 g)I have used many different brands of titanium wire stakes and find these to be the best quality.
Perfect for those hikers who need a little more strength and durability. These stakes are a little longer and thicker than our 6” ultralight titanium tent stakes. They have a little more grip and are less susceptible to bending. These stakes are easier to press into packed or frozen ground compared to larger stakes. Since these are ultralight stakes, It is better to press them into the ground rather than hammering. Use rocks to anchor them in high wind.

6" Sonic Stake
$2.75Weight 0.32 oz (9 g)These stakes are perfect to me : strong enough, really lightweight and the tiny string is very convenient too.
These Sonic Stakes have a "Y-Beam" shape which gives them great holding power in a small package. The three-sided design also gives them good bend resistance for an ultralight stake. The price of aluminum beats titanium or carbon.
These are bright blue, which makes them hard to lose. They have a cord on the end to make it easy to pull them out of the ground.
Never hammer ultralight stakes. While the bend resistance feels very solid, these are able to bend if you put your full weight on them. They can also be bent back reasonably well.
7" Super Sonic Stake
$2.95Weight 0.56 oz (16 g)Reliable, stays securely in ground. Peace of mind, especially in bad weather.
These Y-Beam stakes are the largest and strongest that we have. The 7-inch length and large diameter give them excellent holding power.
These are difficult to bend. They are strong enough to withstand being hammered or pounded with a rock, however the top end may get chewed up so we would still recommend avoiding hammering. If the ground is too firm, turn them sideways and anchor them with a rock.

6" Pachallama 2g Carbon-Pin Tent Stake
$3.95Weight 0.07 oz (2 g)Pachallama 2g Carbon-Pin Tent Stakes are the lightest stakes you can get. The carbon shafts are strong enough to punch through firm ground, and the holding power is similar to 6" Titanium Hook stakes at less than half the weight. These are great for low-intensity applications like pinning down a groundsheet or as auxiliary stakes in conjunction with higher holding power Zpacks Carbon Fiber Stakes. The glow-in-the-dark caps make them easy see at night to avoid tripping.
Some minimalists have used these as their only stakes on full thru-hikes, just pin them with rocks, logs, etc in looser soil.6" Pachallama 2g Carbon-Pin Tent Stake

6.4" Zpacks Carbon Fiber Tent Stake
$4.95Weight 0.22 oz (6.2 g)Easy to place into all terrain. Great holding capability.
Increased surface area make these Carbon Fiber Stakes a great choice for a variety of terrain. Made with a Carbon Fiber shaft with a metal tip and metal end cap, these stakes have the best holding power to weight ratio of any of the stakes we carry. These stakes have a blue cord through the end to make them easy to see and easy to pull out of the ground.
The thick diameter allows them to grip the ground better than thin titanium. These are excellent in loose soil, and they have also proven to be very functional in typical dirt. On packed ground or on bedrock lay them sideways and anchor with rocks.
These are the only stakes that can reliably be carried through airport security. We have carried these stakes through US airport security a dozen times with no issues. Our experience with metal stakes is they are confiscated about half the time. Please report if you have any trouble with these.
