Amazingly light but cuts the wind and holds the heat in with a layer underneath!

– Joe B., ★★★★★

Choosing the right layer for crisp spring mornings and chilly fall nights can be a challenge. Our Men's Ventum Shell is crafted to cut the breeze and trap warmth in your base layer or against your skin.

Ventum fabric strikes the right balance between cutting cold wind while still allowing enough breathability for sweat to escape when hiking on chilly mornings and evenings. Ventum fabric tests at 39.5 CFM under ASTM D-737.

It’s perfect for when a base layer alone is not enough, but insulation would make you overheat. Weighing under 2 ounces this is a must-have item for when you plan to hike in cool weather.

If you don't see your size, we also have some sizes available at a discount in our Bargain Bin while supplies last.

  • Elastic at the back hem, and at the wrists to keep wind out.

  • Elastic at the hood for a snug fit around your face.

  • Constructed from .51 oz/sqyd Ventum ripstop nylon. This fabric is tightly woven and heat calendared to cut the wind.

  • C0" Durable Water Repellent to resist rain spray and body moisture. C0 DWR contains no PFOA or PFOS.

  • Mosquito proof

  • Highly wind resistant

  • Excellent vapor transfer / breathability - comfortable to wear, not clammy

  • Soft feeling - not sticky or plasticy like some other fabrics in this weight range.

  • Ripstop / tear resistant.

  • Lightest weight wind shell available with a hood and full length zipper.

  • The jacket packs down tiny into an integrated storage pocket.

  • All Zpacks gear has a two year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. Please see our return / warranty policy.

  • Made in the USA.

.51 oz/sqyd Ventum Ripstop Nylon

This super light, high quality, 7 denier fabric has a ciré finish on both sides and weighs in at just .51 oz/sqyd (17 g/m²).  Featuring a high quality "C0" durable water repellent (DWR), this ripstop and tear resistant material can also handle a light sprinkle but is not waterproof.

Ventum nylon cuts the wind while still allowing for excellent vapor transfer that makes the fabric highly breathable. With a soft texture, Ventum is not sticky or plasticky like some other fabrics in this weight range.

As the material is down and mosquito proof, it is an excellent choice for wind shell clothing and sleeping bag shells.

Ventum fabric tests at 39.5 CFM under ASTM D-737.

Weight:
 .51 oz/sqyd (17 g/m²)

Measuring:

Measure your chest using a string or cloth tape measure and go by the "Fits up to" size. The "Fits up to" size includes a few inches of wiggle room for layering. The jackets are straight cut (like Men's jackets) and do not flair out at the hips.

They are fine for women, but make sure your hips will fit the bottom hem girth, or size up.  A women's specific version is also available here.

Amazing

Used on the CDT. One of the best pieces of gear I have. Performed as described and lasted an entire thru hike with lots of use.

Warm and lite

Although there are common attributes, I use this more as a UL layer to keep heat in that a wind shirt. I can say it has excelled in all aspects, is lighter and 30% less expensive than competitors.

new favorite gear

Wear every morning and evening when backpacking, and works great in light rain. Packs up to nothing, so is readily accessible in backpack pouch. Works great at retaining heat when wearing over my Vado polartec alpha hoody on colder mornings and evenings, and on colder nights sleeping in my quilt. Is now a favorite essential part of my UL backpacking gear set. Do not use a rain coat, relying instead on this excellent wind shell and an umbrella for summer season backpacking out west.
