.59 oz/sqyd Ventum Ripstop Nylon

This super light, high quality, 7 denier fabric has a ciré finish on both sides and weighs in at just .59 oz/sqyd (20 g/m²).  Featuring a high quality "C6" durable water repellent (DWR), this ripstop and tear resistant material can also handle a light sprinkle but is not waterproof.

Ventum nylon cuts the wind while still allowing for excellent vapor transfer that makes the fabric highly breathable. With a soft texture, Ventum is not sticky or plasticky like some other fabrics in this weight range.

As the material is down and mosquito proof, it is an excellent choice for wind shell clothing and sleeping bag shells.

Measuring:

Measure your chest using a string or cloth tape measure and go by the "Fits up to" size. The "Fits up to" size includes a few inches of wiggle room for layering. The jackets are straight cut (like Men's jackets) and do not flair out at the hips.

They are fine for women, but make sure your hips will fit the bottom hem girth, or size up.  A women's specific version is also available here.

Versatile Shell

While I have only had a Ventum shell for about 3 weeks, I have used other wind shells for several years and I have now hiked in the Ventum Shell about 20 times already in 20-50 degree weather with strong wind most of the trips and light precipitation at times for 3-8 miles at a trip. I have really enjoyed it so far. It does cut the wind pretty well - your skin will thank you for protecting it with this shell! My light down jacket does much better with this shell over it - it traps the heat and keeps the wind out of the stitching areas and yet breathes enough to keep me from sweating a lot. I am 5'8", 170lbs and the medium fits well. layers well, weighs 1.8 ounces on my scale and folds down to the size of a kiwi fruit! It hugs my wrists and hips comfortably snug which keeps the wind out and circulation flowing. It has a soft, somewhat stretchy feel to it that I find very comfortable. It zips up over your mouth which is nice. When it was colder with strong wind, the zipper got cold on my lips so I just pulled up my buff under it and that problem is solved...and another time, just unzipped it a tad for the same effect. If you have a rain jacket that wets out fairly quickly, I think this would likely go well under it as a way to keep you dry since it sheds misty rain pretty well. A wind shell like this will protect you from bugs and is good for sleeping in if you have a drafty tent. I plan to have this as a regular part of my hiking gear!

Great shell

I got one for myself and one for my wife and we both think it’s a great shell. It weighs nothing and takes up almost no space in our packs so we always take it with us. It does what it’s supposed to do. Another great item from Zpacks!

Terrific garment, far lighter than any other shell

I do most o fly hiking and backpacking in the Sierra Nevada of California. In summer and fall, there’s the occasional shower, and any prolonged rain will show up in the weather forecast. So I just need something to lock in the warmth over my fleece for lunch on a windy ridge or cold evening and mornings in camp. I don’t need a 12-ounce parka. This does the job for that. Kept out howling winds last week and is only 2 ounces.
