In 2012-2013 my wife Sheryl and I thru-hiked the Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand. It was about 1,900 miles (3,054K) and it took us 120 days to complete. Sheryl used the Sawyer Water Filter every day of our trip. (Gear list) I normally don't treat any drinking water myself, but Sheryl likes to play it safe and she treats all of hers. In the past Sheryl used Aquamira drops, so this was our first long hike with the filter. Rather than use the provided dirty water bag, Sheryl used an inline adaptor to splice the filter into her Platypus tube as shown in the photo above. The Sawyer filter was an Awesome time saver. Whenever we stopped for water Sheryl just filled her Platypus and off we went. There was no waiting around for drops to mix, and no tedious pumping. As far as we can tell the filter did exactly what it was supposed to, Sheryl never got sick on our hike. The filter never got clogged up, and she only cleaned it a few times by backwashing water with the included syringe. There were a few times on our hike that we had to fill up with nasty farm run-off water. I normally don't treat my own water, but I did break down and borrow her filter on those occasions. It was easy enough to squeeze water through her drinking tube into my own 1L bottles. Unlike my previous thru-hikes I didn't get sick at all in NZ! A big thumbs up for the Sawyer water filter. |
